PROJECT “MICROSPHERE”
Effectiveness of microencapsulated oral vaccine against Phdp in sea bass

Experimental application of our vaccination system on Dicentrarchus lambrax (sea bass), a fish of rising economic relevance in the aquaculture of Mediterranean countries, was carried-out near Abruzzo and Molise Zoo-prophylactic Institute.

Fish model: sea bass of approximately 2 g (100 sea bass/group)
Vaccine: formalin- inactivated Photobacterium damsela subsp. piscicida (Phdp) loaded MS
Encapsulation efficiency (FITC-labeled Phdp): 23 % w/w.

40 days after the treatment, an experimental infection was induced by by i. p. injection bacterial suspensions: mortality was monitored throughout follow-up of 14 days.

CONCLUSIONS.
This oral vaccination microsystem is as effective or more effective than the immersion method, chosen as the elective way commonly used for fish of these size. Besides, this result was obtained using an oral vaccine with a bacterial cells concentration 10-times lower than used for immersion vaccination.
