IIIrd Monothematic Symposium SIF 2011 “Pharmacogenomics and cancer: from bench to bedside”

With over 60 researchers, aged mainly below 38, coming from Universities and Research and cure centres, the Symposium illustrated 20 research studies, 9 orally and 11 as poster presentation, discussed during a dedicated plenary session.
The common opinion of the participants, whether young researchers or senior scientists present to give introductory lectures or to moderate the sessions, was of a great event that enabled everybody to share the personal experience and the enthusiasm and initiatives in the field of pharmacogenomics. In particular, the keynote lecture of dr. Evans, illustrating the problems, the results and the expectations of a pharmacogenomic study aimed at sequencing and compare the normal and tumour genome of 600 children affected with leukaemia, solid and cerebral tumours. The choice to discuss poster presentation in a plenary session chaired by dr. Relling was also much appreciated and the presenting authors got the opportunity to defend their work and to integrate their poster data with further informations.
Although the subject of the symposium was restricted to the field of oncology, the participating young researchers showed the potential offered by the Italian universities and research and cure centres to treat the matters connected with the improvement of the use of drugs and the personalized therapy.  The presented studies concerned mostly patients under pharmacological treatments, very often with a great attention to the size of the sample analysed, giving a strong role to this parameter to translate the results of the studies into the clinical practice. Given the difficulty to recruit an adequate number of patients, homogeneous for pathology, treatment or for both, the presentation of studies with a large number of patients analysed  in the studies  of pharmacogenomics is a clear signal of the capacity of pharmacogenomics to penetrate the medical practice of therapy and of the expectations that this practice has for pharmacogenomics.
The Italian Pharmacological Society has given two prizes, respectively to the best oral and poster presentations. Provided that all the presentations were of high quality and level, said  the committee of referees (prof. Genazzani, Gennaro, Mini and Relling), nominations for the best oral presentation included dr.  Biason, Boscaro, De Iudicibus and Franca, and among the poster presentations, dr. Del Re, Paolicchi and Schillani. Within these nominations the committee has definitely indicated in the work “Childhood lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL): role of polymorphisms in the GST-m, GST-Θ and ABCC1 genes relapse” presented by dr. Raffaella Franca (IRCCS Burlo Garofolo of Trieste) the best oral presentation and in the work “Role of EZH2 SNPs in metastatic colorectal cancer patients treated with FOLFIRI regimen” presented by dr. Elisa Paolicchi (University of Pisa) the best poster presentation.

Cost Action Meeting
, Dublin

PHOTOGALLERY

The experience of Callerio Foundation Onlus in the COST D39 has gone to the end with the final Cost Action Meeting held at Dublin on 5-6 July 2011.
During the 2006-2011 period the Callerio Foundation has managed the Working Group n.3 dedicated to "New targets for metal-based drugs: beyond DNA", with the introduction of new laboratories (from Spain, England, Germany and Slovenia) endowed with biological expertise to the inorganic chemical community of COST D39.

The Callerio Fondation Onlus, particularly with the activity of LINFA laboratory, continued the efforts undertaken during COST D20 (2000-2006), to move the strategy of the identification of novel chemicals for the treatment of tumours to targets different than DNA to reduce toxicity and to increase selectivity. With COST D39, Callerio Foundation fully reached this goal and the new strategies adopted by the chemical community of COST are now focused on a mixed targeted-phenotypic screening system. Given the opportunities of inorganic chemistry based on metals over pure organic compounds, it is expected that in the near future a number of new chemical entities endowed with extremely important mechanism of action will appear to contribute to treat tumours and particularly tumour metastases.

Callerio Foundation Onlus participation in BIB Research at Milan.

On 19-21 May 2010 at 'Fiera of Milano', BIP Research, a forum dedicated to research and technological transfer, presented over 500 research projects in a set of one-to-one meetings with representatives of 50 companies, with the goal of establishing a link between industry and research, and to make easily accessible for the industrial world the scientific results produced by the research carried on by public and private institutions.

The event offered Callerio Foundation Onlus the opportunity of presenting its results and expertise to the representatives of 5 important companies in the sectors of medicine, drugs and cosmetics.

November 25th 2009
